Decus Interiors have reimagined an existing family home overlooking a serene coastal enclave in Sydney, applying the studio’s signature design approach synonymous with refined sophistication.

Articulating a design language that is contemporary yet restrained, quiet yet layered, the project was naturally inspired by its remarkable location – a heritage eucalyptus tree that shades the living area informs the overall palette and numerous material choices.

Working within the confines of immovable structural features of the existing house proved challenging. In striving for cohesion, clever design responses like encasing the existing exterior steel columns visible from the living spaces, has created a softer result.

In order to improve the access to natural light, the design team inserted a pop-up copula in the living room, raising the ceiling above the dining table for additional light access. A new 13 metre full-height, glazed, sliding doors connect the interior with glorious coastal views, seamlessly connecting inside and out to breathtaking effect.

“Working on this project was a joy,” says Decus Interiors’ founder Alex Donohoe Church. “My favourite moments are not a specific room or space. Instead, they’re those simple and understated textural gestures, such as the curved polished plaster fireplace, and the stunning green fluted marble credenza.”

By nurturing a client relationship of intimacy and trust, Decus Interiors have imagined an evocative outcome that elevates the everyday. Cove House is a quiet, considered and layered family home that responds to the contemporary needs of the client, demonstrating that by celebrating the individuality of each project and client, truly original outcomes can be achieved.
