Colapso Studio Reimagines a 1894 Building for Bobo Choses Barcelona Store.

Barcelona‘s rich architectural heritage meets contemporary retail design in the latest Bobo Choses flagship. Situated within the former Tapicerías Gancedo fabric store from 1894, this renovation by Colapso Studio balances historical preservation with modern commercial needs.

The design team approached the protected elements, including the original façade and wooden hangers as creative opportunities rather than limitations. These architectural features became central characters in the design narrative, informing material choices and spatial arrangements throughout.

Stained plywood counters introduce contemporary warmth while respecting the building’s traditional character. The furniture selection draws inspiration from Japanese design principles, featuring clean lines and minimal forms that create a harmonious dialogue with the historical architecture. Natural light floods the interior, highlighting original ceiling details, while contemporary lighting adds layers of ambience.

It's a place where the joy of summer is palpable, where luxury feels effortless, and where every detail invites you to linger just a little longer.

Local artisans have contributed signature elements that elevate the space beyond standard retail design. Rumu Studio created expressive hand-painted curtains for the fitting rooms, incorporating playful patterns and patchwork compositions. A wooden tapestry installation by Casa Chinchilla above the main counter introduces organic textures and warm tones, adding visual depth to the customer experience.

The spatial layout demonstrates sensitivity to both adult and child visitors. Parents can browse collections in sophisticated, calming zones while children explore dedicated play spaces designed for discovery and imagination. This dual-purpose approach ensures the store serves its entire audience effectively.

A fully-equipped kitchen transforms the space into a community hub, hosting events and workshops that bring people together beyond traditional shopping. The material palette celebrates both heritage and innovation. Original architectural features serve as a foundation, while contemporary additions create layers of visual and tactile interest. The result is an environment that feels both fresh and respectfully grounded in its historical context.
