Set amongst the eclectic charm in Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Cremorne, the Cobild Office by Mim Design is a textural exploration of light and transparency, externalizing the values of the business it houses. Fieldwork architects employed an expansive use of mesh cladding to the building’s exterior, which in turn set the tone for an inspired interior narrative. Conceived as an embodiment of Cobild’s ethos, ‘building a relationship for life’, Mim Design’s philosophy was driven by communication, connection, honesty and teamwork.

A considered curation of textured materiality in the open-plan space encourages transparency and authenticity, acting as a device to guide a clear path through the office. Natural stone, powder coated metal, concrete, leather and timber unite the raw with the refined in a coherent and confident aesthetic. White perforated screens throughout enhance consistent affinity between the interior and exterior form, and afford an abundance of natural light.

The reception features a hand-stitched tobacco leather wall, informing colour accents throughout. Above it, a curved, polished plaster ceiling with stepped and inset lighting seemingly hovers, its sculptural form mirrored in the lacquered cylindrical legs of Domo’s Bold console by Frank Chou. Opposite, an Agent 86 Sofa from Grazia & Co sits on Halcyon Lake’s Tenza sisal rug, the texture riffing off the leather wall. A Studio Reggiani floor lamp, mirrored Block coffee table by Nanda Vigo and Planula chairs are metallic touches that speak to an air of quiet luxury.

Lively variations of pattern via Bianco Neve terrazzo and heavily veined Fior de Pesco marble are tempered by a clean tonal palette of grey and white, while layered texture in accents of burnt orange and smokey grey act as key focal points. Warming injections of colour delineate flexible break out spaces, replete with natural light thanks to full height-and-width operable shutters. A perforated central staircase floods both work floors with natural light and forms an architectural gesture of connection and communication.

Two monolithic custom stone island benches in the communal kitchen invite congregation and conviviality. Linear angles are softened by curved leather stools from Grazia & Co, along with the organic form of ceramics from House of Orange and Modern Times. Mim Design realized Cobild’s collaborative ethos in creating an environ that inspires and encourages openness and authenticity.
