Christopher McKenney is a Pensylvania-based conceptual photographer who understands that art isn’t always about rainbows, kittens and butterflies. His dark and twisted surreal images embrace the unlikely tension between terror and beauty. After finding himself in a forrest one day with nothing but a sheet, a chair, and a frame, he started taking photos with a sheet over his head and photoshopping his body out.“I like taking away identity when photographing and to leave people thinking. I only make the photos I do to express myself and what other people see or think is up to them, as long as I make them feel anything I’m ok with that”, explains McKenney.Just like a scene out of a horror movie, McKenney’s surrealistic fantasies are set against the backdrop of remote locations throughout Pensylvania – haunted country side, still lakes and eerie fields. The figures in his images seem to be trapped between worlds – some are bisected by floating portals, while others exist only covered by ghostly shrouds. And each is a small but poignant piece filled with symbolism and meaning that each of us can interpret for ourselves. Check out the rest of his bizarre but captivating photography on his website.
