Four stars. Fifty rooms. Eleven on each differently coloured floor, ranging from beautifully coloured clay, mustard hues and three shades of blue. All different and all calm. The Chess Hotel in Paris takes trends one step further by an unexpected sideways move.

The redesign was a silent affair. To Patrick Gilles & Dorothée Boissier, founders of Gilles & Boissier, it represented an opportunity to complete a project of a different scale close to the Opera, which they explain as “a synthesis of our arts”. The original idea? Just a desire for silence. And that of a return to traditional hostelry, which understands the art of how to receive and take excellent care of it’s guests: the expression of good living and savoir-vivre.

The founders of Gilles & Boissier were once mentored by the renowned designers Philippe Starck and Christian Liaigre. However, they have since forged their own impressive reputation as creators of elegant and beautiful interior spaces. She excels in the art of harmonising all the various elements. He has a knack for placing the spotlight on the most delightful characteristics of timber. She emphasises fluidity and emotion. He favours the rigour of lines. These contradictions merge to produce a style that is unique.

Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier draw their inspiration from these disagreements; bringing together their opposing views so that they eventually complement one another. The result of this marriage is a tribute to French chic and classic and contemporary style. It is both familiar and distinctive and is acclaimed worldwide by leading brands and the most prestigious institutions.
