Ceramic artist Chardean Chum recently launched a collection of sculptural stoneware light fixtures handmade in New York City. In a sea filled with competition, the relative newcomer to the world of ceramics has presented a fresh take on the art form that has been enjoying a revival over the last few years, spurred on by stay-at-home orders and the rise of hobby culture. Yet Chardean has certainly proved she is no hobbyist.

Exploring ceramics with a designer’s sensibility that stems from a background in fashion, she creates with thoughtful consideration given to the silhouette, texture, colour and personality of the ceramic form. Her migration from designing womenswear to sculpting clay forms was with the intent to create pieces that have more permanency and spatial belonging. The collection is a culmination of bold geometric shapes and elegant lines that define and cast shadow and light, giving immediate interest to a space.

With a childhood drawn to fashion, Chardean would design clothes for herself and others. Studies at Parsons and FIT were soon followed by the creation of a line of children’s wear and later women’s wear. It was this desire to create pieces with permanency that led to her exploration of ceramic sculpture. With that, a whole new creative world was discovered, as she explored clay’s ability to take the limitless form of the imagination into reality. Her works feature a skilful use of shape, colour and texture—each playing important roles of varied emphasis.

The collection of eight is available in Stingray, Ellipse, Sunrise, Colour Block Oval, Colour Block Quad, Pent, Poly, Hex. Each piece of the collection feels entirely unlike the next in this impressive debut with most iterations being available in both glaze and a matte terra.
