For Australian fashion label, Dissh, it was an inevitability their flagship Sydney would be located at Bondi Beach. The female-owned and led brand has built its image around the Australian landscape. Located on Hall St, mere metres from the water, the effortless space emulates the label’s pared-back approach to everyday essentials. The brand engaged Melbourne designer Brahman Perera to weave a sense of femininity and soft simplicity into the contemporary and unadorned site. For Dissh’s Founder, Lucy Henry-Hicks, working with Brahman was an easy choice. “We were drawn to his art of tactile layering,” she explains, “he creates spaces full of interest that strike the perfect balance of refinement meeting statement, which is not easy to do. In everything we do, we focus on being intentional and for everything to have a purpose.”Brahman collaborated with Oigall Projects on lining the store with reclaimed travertine—from the walls and totem-esque columns, square shaped inlays embedded in the concrete floor and travertine stools from the Melbourne design gallery’s sister project Brud Studia. Carpet and wallpaper wrap around walls and columns to create new planes and a more tactile landscape within a sensitively muted colour palette.Timeless vintage furniture was selected, alongside works from local makers and artisans, including Armadillo rugs and lighting from ceramic artist Sarah Nedovic’s Monument series.“A large delicate pendant—the Anders from Pinch—made from a fabric derived from banana fibre takes centre stage above the [Giovannetti Collezioni] Anfibio sofa, while the change rooms operate as a source of drama, with billowing ombre fabric that contrasts with the linear architecture of the space,” Brahman elaborates. Working alongside an environmental consultant, Dsquared, towards their first Green Star rating, Dissh developed a new standard of sustainable retail practices, which the brand seeks to implement in their future long-term spaces. Inside the Bondi flagship, some 85% of the timeless furniture pieces are preloved, reclaimed, or sustainably sourced from a network of trusted partners.“We had a goal from conception of the space, to bring to realisation our most sustainable shopfit to date,” Lucy continues. “Bringing to life a space that not only visually represents who we are but also directly reflects our values and what’s important to us, is the greatest achievement of Dissh Bondi.”Born out of deep collaboration, Dissh’s Bondi flagship signals an evolution for the label. “It is the physical extension of the brand, a space that enables our customers to experience the brand in an immersive way—a step into our world,” Lucy concludes.
