Developed for the family-owned self-described ‘marble tailors’, Laboratorio Morseletto, the collection highlights the beauty and complexity of this unique material. Laboratorio Morseletto are revered for their artisanal history with stone and marble, having worked on commissions with names such as Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Frank Gehry, David Chipperfield, Gino Bogoni and Roberto Burle Marx to name a few.BICOLORE is the company’s first ever in-house collection, which began with BCXSY paying a visit to the colossal Morseletto quarries beneath the Berici Hills in Northern Italy. Drawn to the deeper corners of the quarry, BCXSY was mesmerized by the colours of Vicenza Stone, unique in that it fades seamlessly from yellow to grey. From afar the stone looks like a solid shade, however on closer inspection, tiny embedded fossils are revealed, indicating the stone’s ancient origins and revealing delicate variations in colour and structure. The peculiar phenomenon of the two-toned stone forms the core of the BICOLORE collection, honouring its characteristics. Comprised of simple, curved shapes that seemingly slot together, the furniture draws all attention to the natural seam where yellow and grey fuse. The first three pieces of the collection, a bench, cabinet and bar console, are sturdy in shape and size, referencing the correlation between volumes in the immense space and subterranean maze of the quarries. Each piece is at once warm and cool-toned, perfectly balanced and adaptable to any space. BCXSY succeed in presenting a precise yet simple expression of raw materiality.BICOLORE was unveiled during the inaugural EDIT Napoli in July, a contemporary design fair set within a gothic-era church and monastery. There, the collection was awarded Best-In-Show by an international jury of experts. [Images courtesy of BCXSY.
