From monumental public installations to immersive gallery experiences, 2024 has been the year of artists and designers reimagining public engagement with creativity.

The scale and ambition of public art reached new heights with Jim Denevan’s “Self Similar” installation in Abu Dhabi, where nearly a square kilometre of desert was transformed into a mesmerising mandala pattern illuminated by a thousand solar lanterns. In Singapore, Eness’ Iwagumi Air Scape installation reimagined our relationship with nature through glowing rocks and interactive soundscapes. In a cheeky turn of events, Miklós Kiss invited visitors to engage with art in one of the most unexpected places—a public toilet.

Milan Design Week continued to push creative boundaries, with standout exhibitions like Formafantasma’s ‘La Casa Dentro’ at ICA Milan exploring nostalgia and identity, while Dropcity emerged as a new hub for progressive thinking in architecture and design. At Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design, Natural Material Studio’s ‘White Utopia’ installation championed bio-materials to create a surreal, interactive experience that redefined our relationship with space.

Australian artists made their mark through deeply considered works, with Bruce Rowe’s ‘Alter’ exhibition inviting viewers to reconnect with the joy of physical interaction. These meticulously crafted pieces explored architectural elements through a sophisticated understanding of clay as both medium and message.

In an era of digital saturation, these experiential projects remind us of art’s power to create moments of wonder, reflection, and human connection.
