Studio Amaro is the latest eatery to hit Melbourne’s Chapel Street. Designed by Wendy Bergman of Bergman & Co (Poodle Bar, Chin Chin and Sakura), the day-to-night Italo-dining restaurant and basement bar is a veritable feast for the eyes. The interior is home to a detailed material palette rich with timber panelling, mosaic tiles, brass accents and surprising colourful accents.

On the ground floor, an expansive 100-seat Italian restaurant is divided by a curving granite and burgundy mosaic-tiled bar, defining intimate pockets to dine and drink. With a prime corner location and floor-to-ceiling windows to match, the space makes for an ideal spot for a long lunch.

At night, find a change of pace with bespoke bar shelving, aglow with Amaro—the eponymous Italian digestif—pulling people in from the street. Yellow corduroy banquettes sit against olive-toned render, stained plywood and banded timber cladding, crafting an inviting palette with mid-century inflections.

Dark and sexy, a bunker-style cocktail bar embraces a moodier tone. Stained cork floors are complemented by plywood-lined walls, glazed tiling and retro-inspired fabrics—a nod to the venue’s disco and funk playlist spun from a repurposed mid-century console, nestled amongst eclectic furniture and lighting pieces.

A reflective checkerboard down a dark hallway marks the bathroom. Inside cool navy blue walls are complemented by a raw stainless steel sink in a contrast from the bar’s warm mid-century overtones.

For Studio Amaro, Wendy Bergman weaves an intricate tapestry blending contemporary elegance with echoes of the past. Mid-century inspirations sit alongside disco influences, creating a visual feast that mirrors the rich flavours that grace the plates.
