Low Collection is a new furniture series by London architect Benni Allan, that looks at and interrogates the various ways of sitting in cultures worldwide. With a practice intersecting architecture and the visual arts, Benni Allan is an architect, designer and maker who creates objects and spaces that explore materiality, construction, proportions and form. The Low Collection is his first full range of furniture, exclusive to Béton Brut, inspired by recent research trips to Japan, and his time living in China and Southern Spain.Allan’s minimalist functional sculptures’ echo sensual forms and suggest places to rest and interact. Playing with scale and stature, the designer arrives at a new ‘floor culture’ or ‘Zazen’ for modern living. The collection sits on liminal ground between art and function, organic and rational. Curvilinear forms are extruded with precision. Or cleanly crosscut to reveal the quality of the end-grain. Benni Allan is also the artisan to watch,” says Sophie Pearce, director of Béton Brut. “Never have such works in wood excited me since Axel Einar Hjorth’s Utö stool from 1932 or Lina Bo Bardi’s side chair for the centre SESC Pompéia from 1980.”Low Collection will be on show till the 8th of July at the Béton Brut gallery in East London, For more information, head to betonbrut.co.uk.Béton Brut and Modern Art Hire launch 50 Vyner in London.Long-time creative collaborators, Sophie Pearce and Laura Fulmine join forces to open 50 Vyner — a shared two-storey gallery space in East London, unveiled during London Design Festival 2021.
