Moroccan rug brand Beni has collaborated with Flamingo Estate on a playful collection of rugs designed by the latter’s founder Richard Christiansen. In case you’ve missed it (doubt it, though), Flamingo Estate began as a farm delivery box that aimed to connect farmers to new customers for their vegetables when restaurants shut due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Since then, the brand, founded by the Aussie expat, has catapulted into a fully-fledged lifestyle brand.Taking its cues from the colours, flora, fauna, architecture, and details of Flamingo Estate’s lush gardens, buildings and interiors, the 14 rug designs in the new collection mark the brand’s first foray into home furnishings. It all started, as the best things do, at home. Namely, Richard’s home, a 1940’s Spanish-style house that spills across 7 verdant acres tucked between Eagle Rock and Highland Park, Los Angeles, and now serves as the headquarters for the brand that bears its name.Renovated and revived in collaboration with Paris and Marrakech-based architectural firm Studio Ko, many of the materials for Flamingo Estate came directly from Morocco—from the tiles that cover the external buildings to fabrics inside the house and wood carvings in the living room—and the colour palette of the house came directly from Marrakech.Sense of Direction: Alpha60 X Brendan Huntley at the Heide Museum of Modern Art.An installation of paintings, sculptures, monotypes, rugs and clocks that together explore the transience of personal transformation... Hot, dry climates, with similar horticulture. In so many ways our rugs feel like an extension of a story we’d already started to write,” Richard elaborates. “The Estate gave us a broad palette to retell stories that we love from living here and building a home. Morocco translated through Los Angeles is now being reinterpreted through the hands of the weaving team in Morocco.”Many of the designs mirror specific parts of the estate, from the landscape to textures and patterns from Richard’s favourite pieces of furniture. The palette for the rugs is pulled directly from the house—from the green striped walls to artwork by David Hockney to the terracotta pathways that traverse the grounds.“Beni and Flamingo Estate share the same beliefs: a focus on the natural, a dedication to slow ways and ancient practices, and the power of the human hand,” says Beni co-founder Robert Wright. Each of the 14 rug designs in the Flamingo Estate collection comes in 2-3 colourways and is handcrafted using 100% wool. As with all of Beni’s rugs, each piece is woven, washed and dried on-site at their studio showroom in Tameslouht, Morocco, located 20 minutes outside of Marrakech.
