In the heart of Manhattan’s vibrant NoMad district, a 140-square-metre apartment has been transformed by Benedikt Josef into a sophisticated sanctuary that balances contemporary design with vintage pieces. The project serves as a new chapter for a couple transitioning from their Upper West Side family home, showcasing how thoughtful design can create moments of serenity amidst urban energy. The space itself presented a compelling starting point—soaring ceilings and dramatic full-wall windows that frame quintessential New York views of rooftops and water towers. However, the interior needed to be imbued with character that would reflect both its downtown context and the clients’ desire for a space that felt authentic to their next life phase. The design approach revolves around creating subtle tensions through carefully orchestrated material and furniture selections. In the entry, this dialogue begins with an intriguing composition: a sleek polished aluminium bench by Axel Chay creates a contemporary anchor point, while a 1940s art deco mirror and 1970s chrome task lamp add layers of historical context.CHHO Studio's Grid-based Design Meets an Art Collector's Vision in Paris.Utilising a clever grid system inspired by the building's façade, the architects created a flowing space that maximises natural light and showcases the owner's impressive art collection. A pair of 1940s bent aluminium armchairs introduce an element of vintage patina, while a 1950s Serge Mouille cocotte table lamp adds sculptural presence. A custom travertine and bronze coffee table grounds the space with its bespoke craftsmanship. The dining room draws focus with a monumental Julian Rogers painting, complemented by Bodil Kjaer chairs and Jeffrey Loura ceramic sculptures that add texture and visual interest. In the kitchen, walnut and leather counter stools from BDDW bring warmth and tactility to the culinary space. The primary bedroom offers a masterclass in textural layering, where a Philip Jeffries wallcovering creates a subtle backdrop for custom polished steel nightstands. A vintage red task lamp—a fortunate thrift store discovery—adds an unexpected pop of colour, while artwork by Emily Furr completes the sophisticated composition. This thoughtfully executed project demonstrates how a curated mix of contemporary and vintage pieces can create a home that feels both timeless and distinctly of its place—a serene urban retreat that honours its downtown Manhattan context while providing a peaceful sanctuary for its lucky residents. No Stone Unturned: OR23 in Madrid by Estudio Reciente. This Madrid home was made to enhance every hour of the day.
