Late last year, creative duo Finn Thomson and Josef Shanley-Jackson launched ‘Batch’, a series of sculptural and functional objects produced in their workshop in small runs using local materials, inspired by their immediate surroundings.

The emerging art and design studio sandwiched between the Essex Road and the Regent’s Canal in North London was a partnership between two creatives centred around a playful use of materials and exploring design through making.

The collection is designed to be released on the first Monday of every month with a stool, light and tree guard being the first unveiled objects.

Stool 01 features a patinated steel seat with recycled oak legs that resembles bread buns that have been joined in the oven. Light 02, on the other hand, is a lamp with a civic look and feel, featuring a powder-coated steel pole and base plate, anchored by a reclaimed granite rock. “The idea for this piece came about after we spotted a broken curbside with a traffic cone warning beside it down the road from our studio,” says Josef. “The design is a seemingly precarious balance between the heavy stone and the light itself. Each element of the light relies on the other for stability.”

“With Batch, we are thinking about how our objects are going to occupy space and the impact colour, texture and physics can have,” says Finn. “We want to push back against the quantity of low-quality objects being produced in the world by producing things designed to last.”

Having both studied sculpture at university, the duo launched Mitre & Mondays in 2020 to collaborate with artists, designers and architects on creative interiors and public realm projects. Most recently, they fabricated the Paradise Has Many Gates installation piece by Ajlan Gharem that won the V&A’s Jameel Art Prize. They have also partnered with esteemed architect practices such as Studio Weave, Studio Shaw and Thiss Works.
