Spotlighting creators who blend exceptional craftsmanship with inspired use of materials, New Orleans-based SWADOH introduces three new table lights by Biarritz-based designer Baptiste Lanne. Each lamp remains a unique model, handcrafted by Lanne in his native France before receiving finishing touches in New Orleans.

With a refreshingly original vision, Lanne’s work is infused with a poetic image of nature — his biggest inspiration. Having worked in acclaimed design studios such as Philippe Starck and Habitat for nearly ten years, Lanne felt the need to distance himself from days spent in front of screens, and return to the freedom he enjoyed as a child.

Lanne moved from Paris to Biarritz to get closer to the ocean and to set up his own studio where he crafts one-of-a-kind pieces including lamps, sculptures, drawings, and paintings. A self-taught artist, his decision to start woodworking and hand-carving was also informed by an edifying visit to Japan where he experienced the organic beauty of Japanese craft first-hand.

Fusing his childhood knowledge of sculpture, the intent of his practice is to bring the great outdoors inside, with each of his pieces offering solutions that are functional, minimal, and integrated. Every piece is fabricated on an individual, one-off basis and therefore remains completely unique.

The new Corolle 03 and Corolle 04 lights represent an extension of Lanne’s existing Corolle series (translating to “all the collective petals of a single flower”), the design of which always includes a base and one screen or plate behind the lightbulb. With Corolle 03, chiselled walnut acts as a screen for the globe bulb delicately nestled on a walnut base. Similarly, Corolle 04 features a chiselled walnut screen that is dyed with Chinese calligraphy ink with the fixture’s walnut base tinted using brou de noix, a natural stain made from walnut shell.

Methodically sculpted, L’Embellie (translating to ‘embellished’) is dyed entirely with Chinese calligraphy ink, and features an oak surface that sits on a linden tree base. This table lamp represents a departure from the Corolle series due to its upright bulb that, when illuminated, produces a glow across the lamp’s textured surface base that is similar to the reflection of moonlight on the sea.
