Atelier Baulier has remodelled and extended the lower-ground floor apartment of an early Victorian house in North-East London. The clients engaged the studio to increase the size of the kitchen and create a living space directly opening onto the garden.

The entire rear facade, along with an existing shed was removed to combine the new and old areas, allowing for a sunken patio to continue seamlessly from the new living room. Inside, Atelier Baulier removed partitions to create a floor plan that is now articulated around a brass-clad storage volume and staircase leading up the bedrooms.

Large sliding doors open onto the garden with a flush threshold between the two blurring the line between inside and the outside. Visual connections to the garden are provided from all rooms through creative ways like a set of second-hand Crittall doors connecting the open kitchen and living room spaces and an arched cut-out on the stairs. A skylight slices through the extension increasing the ceiling height and providing views upwards to the sky.

“The recurring circular shapes found at various scales in the project take their cue from the arch detail surrounding the window on the front elevation, a legacy from the Georgian era.” explains Aurore Baulier. “The exercise was to anchor the project into its context and achieve a generous and timeless simplicity.”

The studio entirely refurbished the space to optimise storage and circulation. Materials were selected for their durability and ability to acquire a patina over time. The natural brass-clad volume is the centrepiece, complemented with grey clay skim floors and white oiled plywood. The black Ikea kitchen, made from recycled plastic bottles, features Granby Rock worktops which use building rubble bound together to create a terrazzo-like material.
