Over the last 30 years, the Artists for Kids Culture (AKC) Auction has become a devoted fundraiser in the Melbourne arts community, bringing together the work of prominent Australian artists and raising funds to make a direct, positive impact on the lives of children experiencing hardship. This year is no different with over 52 pieces from much-loved and renowned artists up for grabs.Founded by the late Australian artist David Larwill, AKC makes direct grants, enabling kids to participate in art and cultural activities that would not otherwise be available to them. His legacy lives on through the work of AKC.Amongst the work up for auction, this year are pieces by Brett Whiteley, David Bromley, Mark Schallar, Fred and Mary Schepisi, Lisa Roet, Rennie Ellis, Kate Shaw and, of course, David Larwill. Last year the AKC auction raised over $100,000, and it is hoped the 2023 Auction will be as successful. Artwork by Steve Cox. Artwork by Ricky Howell. Artwork by Simone Millman. The charity’s hands-on approach removes the bureaucratic boundaries that often impede access to funding. AKC Co-Director and widow of David, Fiona Larwill, believes the strength of the foundation lies in this freedom. “We can donate the funds to projects and programs for kids experiencing hardship, whom we believe need our support, without a lot of red tape. David would be so proud to see how many children have been assisted by AKC,” Fiona elaborates. The 2023 AKC Annual Art Auction is being held at the George Ballroom in St Kilda on Thursday, 16th November, with remote bidding available for those who cannot make it. The works will also be on show beforehand at Brightspace Gallery from November 10-12.AKC inspires kids to use the arts to challenge themselves, build belief in their own creativity and improve their wellbeing. Grants have paid for activities such as music and dance lessons, art classes, drama, gymnastics, swimming, horse riding, martial arts and community sports.
