It’s been nearly six years since our original interview with Nicci Green, Founder & Creative Director of Melbourne lighting brand Articolo. A lot has changed for Articolo and the whole world since then, but one thing has remained consistent – Melbourne brand’s commitment to Australian-made, handcrafted timeless architectural lighting design.

From the very beginning, Articolo has worked closely with a diverse team of artisans who have honed their skills over many years in glass blowing, ceramics, metalwork, woodworking and copper smithing. And now the brand has released a short film that celebrates the Artisans of Articolo via a short film created in collaboration with SIRAP.

“As we collectively navigate our way through these troubling times, as a designer I continue to find solace in creative collaboration,” says Nicci. “Articolo simply would not exist without the exceptional skill of our artisan makers – our glassblowers, our metalworkers and our dedicated finishing artists. For this reason, we’ve used this time to capture their spirit and their dedication in our debut short film, Artisanally Articolo.”

Renowned for its unique ‘shadow play’ and striations of light, Articolo lighting’s unusual atmospheric quality is achieved through mouth-blown glass. The making process of various pieces is documented in this evocative short film, giving an intimate insight into specialist artisans that bring each Articolo piece to life.

“I strive to ensure each design reflects the many hands that have produced it, celebrating the craftsmen and woman whose skill and talent I deeply respect,” says Nicci. “I love the artisanal nature and nuances of mouth-blown glass and solid metals. It’s the human element that cannot be replicated through mass production.”

Articolo celebrates the nature of mouth-blown glass with its nuances, fluidity, and emotion that are intrinsic to this process. Equally, Nicci’s love of solid metals, such as hand-finished brass and hand-rubbed bronze, is the direct results of the evidence of the human touch by the hands that create each product.

Articolo is made to order in Melbourne by a network of largely local artisan makers. The entire collection and bespoke commissions are available globally. For more information visit articololighting.com.
