We have a soft spot for the Australian brand Articolo Studios, whose trajectory we’ve followed with keen interest over the last few years. Needless to say, we were thrilled to witness the brand’s proud expansion into the furniture category during Milan Design Week this past April. Articolo Home collection brings the same atelier-like precision we’ve come to expect from the brand’s lighting fixtures in its debut furniture smalls capsule. For founder and creative director Nicci Kavals, who has built Articolo into one of Australia’s leading bespoke interior and lighting companies, it was an exciting but not unexpected pivot. “Articolo Home is a natural progression in Articolo Studios’ evolution, and one that we’re really excited about launching and adding to in the future,” she explains.Featuring four key collections, Nicci celebrates her love for Belgian architecture and Italian classicism within a contemporary minimalist framework. With influences steeped in European history, the collection refines this into modern and practical pieces perfect for the everyday. This Yellowtrace Promotion is supported by Articolo Studios. For the Milan debut, Nicci worked with long-time collaborator David Goss of Melbourne architecture firm Studio Goss, who transformed the gallery space on Via Solferino in Brera. In the fitting two-level space, Articolo Home was vividly brought to life against a backdrop of stunning arches and vaulted ceilings.Bold, high-gloss-coloured blocks contrasted the minimalist interior, offering rich, colour-tinted reflections offering a sense of drama. Textured render finishes contrasted against these coloured blocks and evoked the beauty and texture of Italian travertine.“I created a series of minimalist rectilinear elements with a bold use of colour and layered textures that reference the city of Milan,” David explains. “Deep green carpet runners guide visitors through the space in a nod to similar carpet elements in the marble-clad foyers and entryways throughout the city.”David’s design can be reflected in the pieces themselves. Nicci juxtaposed texture and tactility through the use of metal, wood, leather, and stone. The palette references the heritage fashion houses in Europe with hues of latte, olive, burgundy, and camel. “I have combined haute elegance and simple functionality so the pieces aren’t overly complicated. They’re designed to speak to people and make them feel at home,” Nicci elaborates.Illuminate Your World With the Essence of Gold: Oro Lighting Collection by Articolo Studios.Gold foil flakes grace the interior of each ball resulting in a composition that is truly one-of-a-kind. Radiating a golden glow... Echoing mid-century modernism, the Cuff Collection employs hollow cylinders as the foundation for pragmatic variations on a theme. A low-set coffee table with a generously broad circumference is complemented by taller, narrower side and bedside tables (pictured above). The Fin Collection is an exercise in robust minimalism balanced by fine detailing. Italian timber veneer cylinders of two sizes are interrupted only by contrasting slender vertical fins that extend just beyond the rim. A simple colour palette contrasts light and dark—Dark veneer with pale veneer. The Slip Collection consists of sophisticated yet simple forms. Solid cylinder tables surprise with a cantilevered upper section revealing an underlying bronze disc. Leather finishes are available in earth and autumn tones. Each piece in the collection—comprising Flare, Slip, Cuff and Fin—features a distinct silhouette and personality. Geometric and sculptural, Flare comprises two octagonal forms that flare at the top. The collection plays on colour, texture and shadow to emphasise contrast. Slip is sophisticated simplicity. Solid cylinder tables surprise with a cantilevered upper section revealing an underlying bronze disc. For Cuff, mid-century modernism was the model as hollow cylinders define a low set broad coffee table and taller narrower side and bedside tables. Fin, on the other hand, is an exercise in robust minimalism balanced by fine detailing. Italian timber veneer cylinders of two sizes are interrupted only by contrasting slender vertical fins. All the pieces are handcrafted by local artisans, showcasing age-old crafts and workmanship. Meticulously made with Articolo’s appreciation of the inherent beauty of hand-worked natural materials, it’s a very exciting first step in the brand’s continued development.
