Located in a small village northeast of Barcelona, Arquitectura-G’s house in Sant Antoni unfolds with an industrial aesthetic softened by dusty terracotta hues. The shade engulfs almost every surface, creating a monochromatic, textural scheme that feels warm and welcoming. Despite the bright and, at times, overwhelming colour, the home feels sophisticated and restrained.

Arquitectura-G explains that spaces have been divided into day and night areas, a separation that is distinguished by different structural systems.

“On the one hand, the day area, in contact with the land, is defined through a heavy wall structure,” says the team. “On the other hand, the night area, elevated from the plot, is conceived with a light construction system and a porticoed structure that stands on top of the basement/parking”.

Living spaces take on an open-plan structure, gradual stepping allowing for defined pockets of space without the need for walls. Warm sunlight is able to penetrate deep into the floor plate, creating luminous places to relax as the day passes by.

Architects explain that “there is a clear hierarchy in the size of spaces, in order to define the different uses” –  the smallest space, the study, transitions into the largest space, the living room. Bedrooms, however, unfold in a sequence without hierarchy. Each opens onto the common area through large shutter doors, allowing for soft natural lighting.

The transitional space between the private and public modes of the house is marked by a skylight lit hallway. A row of bright red columns grows out of a wooden corridor, holding the power to segregate or join two separate worlds.

Arquitectura-G’s House in Sant Antoni sits perched on a plot with a steep incline. In response, architects have created a stepped scheme that maximises internal space while maintaining a visual connection with the surrounding landscape.
