Jolson have reimagined two apartments to create Arc Side Residence, a home that celebrates curving forms and sculptural geometry. The original buildings, designed in 2001 by Cox Carmichael, have undergone a complete structural overhaul – the roof and building envelope have been maintained as a shell that houses the new, contemporary design.

The original façade’s inverted arch became the driving influence for the design. Architecture writer, Stephen Crafti explains in his text that “the façade was simplified and the curves became a subtle feature within every space, be it the gentle curved polished plaster walls or the forms of the ceilings”.

The sinuous curves of an extravagant staircase now sit proudly in a 7-meter-high void that cuts through the centre of the building. To refer to this intervention as special would be an understatement – its finely articulated white form could easily fit in any art exhibit alongside handmade sculptures. Instead, it’s monumental scale brings a sense of refined luxury and sheer delight to this family home.

Instrumental to Jolson’s design was the introduction of light-filled, expansive living spaces. Previously many rooms featured low ceilings and only benefited from views from one aspect. With the renovation, each space now enjoys sightlines across every floor, inviting views from east across to west side.

The spatial layout of the home became important to ensure moments of intimacy and shared family time. The kitchen and living areas are located on the top level to maximize views and light, while bedrooms are positioned on the lower levels.

The colour palette for the project is deliberately understated, allowing superbly detailed joinery and high-quality materials to shine. Stephen Crafti outlines, “The Jolson team were mindful of not only creating the appropriate spaces for their clients but allowing for a more timeless aesthetic that would be appreciated now, and well into the future”.

Stone has been used for benches and splashbacks, steel for the staircase, brass for joinery, and American oak timber for the floors. The simplicity creates wonderfully calming spaces. A pastiche of neutral tones surrounds occupants like a gentle hug, encouraging the stresses of the outside world to melt away.
