After years of visiting the Yucca Valley, in 2021, interior and product designer Leah Ring of Another Human decided to purchase a property she could use to experiment with an extreme version of her design sensibilities.Leaving only the envelope of the structures intact, Leah pushed her imagination and creativity to make spaces that mix bold colours and lively shapes with custom and vintage pieces embodying a sense of fun. The property serves as her second home and a showcase of her interior and furniture designs.Colour is an important element in all of Leah’s work. Consisting of seven spaces, each room in the house is painted in a different colour to complement the furniture—the living room, for example—doused in sky blue—pairs a sofa made from three different shades of denim with a coffee table she designed.Nostalgic Escape: Foam House in Torquay by Amelda Wilde. When Amelia Wilde’s client came across this property, it was exactly what they were looking for—a quintessential Torquay home that transported them back to childhood vacations on the coast of Melbourne. Deep saturated colours can be best seen in the kitchen and bathroom, which both use the same blue Cambria quartz for the countertops, along with a combination of blue and green tiles. In the kitchen, she offset the deep blue counters with light lime green custom cabinets and aqua blue pulls. This keeps the space feeling bright and airy even with the small proportions. The chequered floor linoleum is mirrored in the checked lime and aqua tile backsplash. In the bathroom, a pattern of green tiles gives way to blue as you move down the wall. Hot pink accentuates the bathroom in the form of a Peter Shire toilet seat, Vola faucet, and pink plumbing fixtures. Leah designed a custom vanity that uses resin nugget pulls by Chen Chen and Kai Williams. In the bedroom, the lime green walls are accentuated by tricolour custom curtains. A commissioned Liliah Rose soft sculpture hangs above the vintage Paul Frankl headboard. Ring combines a custom-made nightstand made by Objects for Objects, inspired by Jean Royere, with a vintage lamp.Redwood House: A 1970’s San Francisco Home Transformed by Studio Terpeluk.Through a relentless pursuit of design integrity and a healthy serve of creative curiosity, Studio Terpeluk’s renovation of this 1974 two-story San Francisco home is informed by reverence for history... Warm colours define the guesthouse. The bedroom has a deep red custom-designed linen native shape headboard and a deep red bedspread with a magenta fridge—both custom-designed by Leah. Pale pink Componibili Bio Storage Units frame the bed as nightstands paired with red and white vintage lamps. The bathroom, seen from the bedroom, has a matching palette with contrasting red and orange tiles paired with vintage bathroom accessories in bright cherry red.Leah’s office feels otherworldly. The whole interior is covered with a custom cloud mural wallpaper that Ring developed with an East Coast wallpaper vendor. To create the wallpaper, Ring sent cloud reference images with the amount of white and blue she wanted, as well as the form and fluffiness of the clouds. Blue is a dominant colour within space. For the chair and ottoman, she pulled inspiration from winter coats with chunky oversized zippers.Designed much in the same way Leah works with clients—by developing a narrative and a dialogue with the existing architecture through custom pieces, colour choices, and furniture that melds eras—this home is a bonkers, fun and playful desert oasis.Three Pieces: Compact Madrid Apartment by Gonzalo del Val + Toni Gelabert.Sink your teeth into the zesty orange and grapefruit tones of this delightfully renovated apartment in the Spanish capital.
