Talented father and daughter duo, Anna Ancher & John Ancher, both of them an architect and an artist, are hosting an upcoming joint exhibition of individual works at Quadrant Gallery in Melbourne. Their subjects and chosen means of expression are great in contrast, but when presented together they create an unexpected variety of visual rhythms to give the exhibition a syncopated energy and drive.

“I draw to express beauty, the definition of which is always subjective. I stand beneath the long-abandoned railway bridge, its hulking silhouette scored overhead against the infinite sky. The bridge is disused, it’s qualities overlooked for years. Yet there is inspiration and quiet splendour cast in the lacy staccato shadows. In representing the unsung built form I try to express the echo, the pause, the unexpected brilliance none the less still present and majestic,” explains Anna about her work.

John describes his process as painting “abstracted interpretations of musical notes in the landscape, in the ether, in the trees. My ‘notes’ are controlled bursts of colour placed at random intervals within horizontal lines like visual scores. I have also painted the fluid idea of trees as visual poetry sometimes threatened by the concept of human progress.”
