In a city where space comes at an absolute premium, New York-based Adrian Chan Design and Research Office (ADRO) has thoughtfully renovated a 53-square-meter Hong Kong apartment, transforming spatial limitations into opportunities for innovation.

“The clients were concerned about how clutter was affecting their relationship and family organization in a small space,” shares Adrian Chan, continuing, “The home needed to be welcoming and nurturing for the new baby, both physically and experientially.”

The showpiece of this renovation is an elegant undulating wall that winds through the home like a ribbon, concealing a bathroom, storage, and mechanical systems while serving as an intuitive wayfinding element. This sinuous feature guides residents from the kitchen to the bedroom, creating a gentle flow that makes the compact space feel remarkably expansive despite the compact footprint.

ADRO’s approach to storage is particularly clever, implementing both “horizontal” and “vertical” cabinetry solutions. The master bedroom features a hydraulic floor system that lifts to reveal storage for seasonal items, while the corridor ceiling conceals built-in cabinetry for Chinese dried goods and luggage. Even the bedroom desk and living room bench incorporate flip-up mechanisms for additional storage.

ADRO conducted a thorough analysis of the family’s belongings and projected their needs over the next decade. This forward-thinking approach ensures the space will adapt to the growing family’s evolving requirements, particularly important with a new baby in the picture.

The material palette is understated, with oak veneer providing a cost-effective solution that doesn’t compromise elegance. The project’s budget efficiency is notable—minimal demolition and careful material selection allowed ADRO to create an architecturally significant space without breaking the bank.

In essence, this apartment proves that spatial or budget constraints need not limit design ambition. Through meticulous planning and integrative design strategies, ADRO has created a home that’s not just functional but also nurturing for family life through elevating daily rituals. The result is a space where every square millimetre serves a purpose, yet nothing feels cramped or compromised.
