Blending Nature & Architecture: The Ravine in Ubud by A Work of Substance.

Nestled within the heart of Ubud’s forests, this Balinese residence by A Work of Substance seamlessly blends nature and architecture. Named after the steep gorges that shape the area, The Ravine plays extension to its surrounding landscape.

The secluded home finds beauty in its layers, with a foundation of brick, stone, and concrete that softens into wood, bamboo and leaves for the structure’s upper levels. Though subdued in palette, the materials used reflect the rawness of the location. The shape of the space pays homage to Balinese craftsmanship with bespoke furniture and lighting inspired by the region’s wood carving and traditional instruments.

Blurring the line between indoor and outdoor, greenery envelops the property. Taking after Bali’s distinctive vernacular architecture, the environment divides itself into public and private areas, with open courtyards for quiet reflection. With views of trees all around, framed by generous openings the architecture was influenced by Bali’s landscape of forests, rice terraces, and fields.

The French architect has restored a heritage Balinese wantilan house in Ubud known as The House of the Full Moon, bringing modern comforts to a traditional home..

“A place where it is unclear where the natural and man-made architecture begins and ends, The Ravine invites contemplation about our bonds to the earth and helps us remain rooted in ourselves,” concludes the design team.
