There’s a lot happening the in the fascinating world of 3D-printed technology these days, and this project is one of the coolest examples we’ve seen. This CB500 Honda sculpture is a full-size, 3D-printed replica by Canadian artist Jonathan Brand. The motorcycle is made of 18 rolls of biodegradable corn plastic, weighing less than 20kg. The entire prototype design was created and assembled in the artist’s studio. To shape the pieces, Brand used his two 3D printers, Rhino, Netfabb, Geomagic, Kisslicer, 3D Studio Max and Adobe Illustrator. Got that? Good.

Working with heavy stock coated with a matte inkjet print varnish, Band builds his initial forms, cutting the parts out by hand, and then prints and cuts each model individually. He explains that the process is roughly analogous when he gets to the 3D printing stage, as the finished product is printed in small sections and glued piece-by-piece.

“With 3D printing I can draw on the computer and immediately see the piece come to life,” explains Brand. “Everything was printed, numbered, cataloged and put into a box, for me to assemble it even a year later.”  Madness.
