Scanlan Theodore‘s newest stores – in Sydney’s Paddington and The Strand Arcade, and Melbourne’s Armadale – have been designed by Sydney based practice, Meacham Nockles McQualter. Like the iconic Australian fashion label, the architects approached these retail fit-outs with the same commitment to simple, modern classic design, centring around beautiful materials and attentive craftsmanship.

Like Scanlan Theodore, Meacham Nockles McQualter have been operating for over 25 years. Despite being an established practice, their work is far from a conservative yawn-fest. These retail fit-outs are imbued with a freshness and excitement one might expect from a young, emerging practice.

The spaces are classic and enduring but are injected with moments of daring – the colour palette is neutral but the movement of the patterned floors create a spike of dynamism. Time honoured linen curtains hang alongside the dramatic geometry of sculpted mirrors, gently chamfered joinery and curved steel hanging rails.

Mecham Nockles McQualter prove their genius through a perfectly balanced negotiation between sharp inventiveness and classic, modern design. Nicely done.
