Aust & Amelung is a young German design studio formed by two product designers – Miriam Aust and Sebastian Amelung. The pair creates and develops lighting, furniture and interiors in their Kassel studio. Human desire for individuality is a reoccurring theme in their work. Their products reflect on this idea resulting in the reuse of existing objects, or encouraging the user to take an active role in manipulating the production process of the product. Think bookshelves constructed around an existing old book, or furniture that includes plants turning the user into a gardener and designer. In their project Like Paper, they take an active role in the production process making every object unique while maintaining the character of a series. A Floor Lamp by Aust & Amelung. Photos © Minu Lee. Their latest product is A Floor Lamp, based on the simple mechanism of a beam balance. A long beam cranes across the room and balances a lampshade on one side against a sandbag in the other. The sandbag can be moved manually into four positions.Like Paper by Aust & Amelung. Photos © Minu Lee, Merlin Laumert. What seems to be folded paper, is made out of slewed concrete. The lamps from Like Paper series are an image of what we expect to be a paper-folded lampshade. They imitate the fine surfaces of paper individuality through arbitrary edges, kinks and creases. Through this each object is unique. Although certain patterns are used, the series results and exists through distortion. While some lamps shine downwards by dangling from the ceiling, others lie “exhausted” on the surface and gleam in strange directions.Project supported by German technologies & engineering concepts. Framed and exhibited, it is presented with a new functionality. Opened, the book covers the contents inside. Closing the book opens the box. The book turns into a trap door that reveals a storage area or secret compartment.Vase & Leuchte by Miriam Aust. The nature is presented artifcially, the living being used as material and laboratory aesthetics is brought into the living room.Design by Miriam Aust. Available at Dua Shop.
