This short film titled “Box” by San Francisco-based design and engineering studio Bot & Dolly, is the first of its kind to combine projection mapping of 3D computer graphics, robotics and an actor into a synchronised performance. Described by the creators as being both an “artistic statement and technical demonstration”, the film explores “the synthesis of real and digital space through projection mapping on moving surfaces”.

For you techie types – Bot & Dolly were able to achieve this through the immeasurably creative use of one actor, two high-res projectors and three industrial robots (one for the camera) that were synchronised and controlled by integrating their own software with Autodesk’s Maya. And if that’s not impressive enough, the performance was captured entirely in camera.

As trailblazers of this artistic technology mash-up, their forecast for what I would call a new creative dialect, is that they “believe this methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations, and define new genres of expression”. If that doesn’t float your boat, then just watch the video and be prepared to be mind-blown!
