Christopher Jenner debut collection ‘The Looking Glass House’ at the Salone del Mobile 2012.

It’s no secret that, due to shit planning on Husband’s and my own behalf, instead of rubbing shoulders with the design elite and attending awesome parties at Salone del Mobile in Milan this year, I spent that same week at a maternity ward having given birth to our baby boy. Talk about a very different experience to last year and the year before. Anyway, I think I’ve managed to give the term “designer baby” a whole new meaning, no?

In my true tragic design nerd form, I attempted to follow Milan developments from my hospital bed via various online channels (I am so sad, I know). One of the installation I bookmarked was ‘The Looking Glass House’ by Christopher Jenner – South African-born, London based furniture designer. Wowee – talk about pure visual ecstasy!

This installation was housed in the Sala Napolionica at the Accademia di Brera on Via Brera. The “House” was hand made in the UK in mirror polished Stainless Steel to “reflect a sound induced matrix of ever changing coloured light.”

“Swell was designed with the specific intent of stirring emotions. I wanted the collection to have a simple and immediate appeal. I believe design should be instinctive and individual – a direct response to the mass produced tyranny of good taste.”

Perhaps the reason I love this installation so much is that it reminds me of mirrored infinity rooms by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (one of my personal favourites). So much wild visual goodness, don’t you think? Wish I could have experienced it in person.
