In his latest series I Am Winnie the Pooh, French photographer Benjamin Béchet kidnaps a handful of superheroes and children’s icons from their fairytale settings and strips them of their supernatural powers by showing them in real life situations.Apart from being quite clever and amusing, there is a certain darkness and melancholy in these images. To me, they express an idea that every individual, regardless of their status, is made up of multiple layers, that we are all vulnerable and susceptible to difficulty, no matter how invincible we may feel. “The project serves as a reminder that what you see is never what you get, that people are always more complex, that each identity is only partial and that we are all one, none and a hundred thousand.” Benjamin Béchet for HuffPost UK Culture. These leave my heart feeling a little injured :(Two reasons. One, it’s never nice to see someone struggle (especially your favourite childhood characters) and two, I feel like a small selection of these play on racial stereotypes. I feel ashamed to say that I even recognize this…maybe the artist wanted us to explore this ugly side of ourselves? I feel like it says something bad about me. My own background is often associated with hired help, so perhaps that’s why this has evoked this response. Reply Oliver @ Sabi Style March 29, 2012 I’m with Ella – there is something realy dark about these. Spiderman at the lights cleaning wind screens and Snow White working her strip really got me.Don’t get me wrong through I love that they provoke. Its really interesting to see our fairytale & superheros in a more human light…Brilliant stuff!
