This small hotel is located in the Main Square of Ayllón, a medieval village in Segovia, Spain. The intervention to the original building by Lucas y Hernández- Gil Arquitectos is simple and austere but warm and comfortable at the same time – a contemporary reconstruction that follows a rustic style. Respect was one of the main starting points for the architects, committed to maintaing the nature of the local scale and adapting new and contemporary architecture to the traditional one.

The main idea was to create a simple and sober effect. The space on itself provides calmness and peacefulness, with shades of colour that gives freshness just like the poppies in the Castilian wheat fields. The route through the hotel is a great experience for the guests as it is set within the complex medieval architecture surrounding.

The hotel is situated within two old houses. A beautiful communal courtyard achieves the unity between the two houses. The hotel has 18 rooms, each one different, with 3 linked dining rooms.

The full frame window glass on at the entrance is a hint of the future styling that awaits within. What a wonderful combination of old and new. The hardwood floors not only help to tie this building to its past, but also add an amount of warmth. Would be nice to see a ‘cool light blue’ used in the bathrooms. The marble and glass would embrace a shade of blue. Would like to see what would happen if the heavy flooring wood was used in ‘standing areas’ within the bathroom– exit of shower and area infront of sink. Could be a nice break in the marble design?
