Mark Leib is back with his Part 02 roundup of the recent London Design Festival. Today he tells us about The Shoreditch Design Triangle, De La Espada at Tramshed, Ridley’s pop-up restaurant by The Decorators and Atelier ChanChan and Jean Prouvé by G-Star RAW for Vitra. Extreme love!


The Shoreditch Design Triangle (below).

Thirty four galleries, shops and studios showed work around Old Street, Great Eastern Street and Shoreditch High Street. The big show here is Tramshed on Rivington Street. De La Espada had filled most of Tramshed with work from AutobanIlse Crawford and Søren Rose Studio.

Tent on Brick Lane (below). 

Tent show was busy and with lots of exhibitors, but there were few ideas or surprises.

De La Espada at Tramshed on Rivington St in Shoreditch.

Easily the best work I saw all week was Benjamin Hubert for De La Espada. He is on fire…. A superb, delicately detailed chair with perforated leather panels and white oak. A leather wrapped webbed lounger with hexagonal stitched cushions. A wire table, stunning solid marble pendants and tumbled granite drums with frivolous button detail oak lids completed the collection. Seriously bloody good.

Ridley’s pop-up restaurant. 

Deep in Dalston’s Ridley Road market The Decorators and Atelier ChanChan created a real gem. A two storey scaffold structure was built in a corner of the bustling marketplace. The kitchen was on the ground floor and a custom table for fifteen of the first floor. A hoist took food up to the first floor and became the table top. The concept was to create a space for exhibitionist eating with a sustainable food process.

Lunches were exchanged for goods collected from the market of a value of £3. The barter goods were then used to make the evening meal. Upon arrival at lunch my date Phoebe and I were instructed to go into the market and find £3 pounds worth of almonds and pine nuts. The chefs change daily and our spinach and ricotta Italian lunch was amazing. An inspired, clever project .

Prouvé RAW for Vitra.

An installation in the shop windows of the Vitra showroom on Clerkenwell Road of reworks of seventeen Jean Prouvé classics by G-Star.
