Well you certainly can’t say that I post about commercial buildings all that often here on yellowtrace. If ever. That’s probably because most of them leave me feeling flat and fairly unexcited.

It’s quite a different story with this little puppy though – The new ABC Centre of Drawing and Illustration in Madrid. This is such a fantastic example of a successfully marriage between contemporary architecture and existing heritage structure. The two integrate seamlessly and manage to create a unique sense of aesthetic and personality, thanks to clever material choices and a streamlined approach to detailing. And let’s not forget that yellow floor. Hooray! Such a fantastic and brave choice – I absolutely love, love, love it. Seriously, how brilliant is it!? A little ray of sunshine… Oh and that facade isn’t too shabby either.

Nice work Aranguren & Gallegos Architects.

That floor is amazing! Lets face it, if they got it wrong it could quite easily look like a big puddle of pi… ssoooo hats off to them for making it work so well.

For me I think its the shadows in the space that throw grey (under the window) or black (on the roof line) that make the yellow so striking.

Its the facade that I really LOVE – that Green with the Silvers/Greys is fantastic and I love the organic flow of triangles.
