I am always very proud of Husband. Why…? Because he’s friggin’ awesome! Right, so I may be a bit biased, but he really is one of those people that excels at everything he does. And that can be really annoying too – for example when I am competing against him at playstation games, cards, social sports, pictionary or whatever. Ok, so maybe I’m a little bit competitive {yes, you’ve heard it here first!} and therein lies the problem…

Sorry to get a bit off the track. Again. The reason for this post is that Husband has just started his first ever photography course at the Australian Centre for Photography {ACP}. He is enrolled in the 5 week long Camera Craft 2, and this weekend he had to shoot his very first assignment – The Rules of Composition. I thought it might be fun to blog about his progress, so that all of us may learn alongside him through looking at his shots.

The aim of this assignment was to explore ways in which the frame of the camera isolates the subject in the viewfinder, and to increase the awareness of the frame and how the choices made affect the composition. He was allowed to shoot only in outdoor natural light and he had to chose one medium sized “inanimate object with an interesting shape”. In the shoot, he had to make a series of compositional elements, some of which were rule of thirds, diminishing perspective, balance/ counterpoint, positive/ negative space, contrast of tones and subject, depth of field, pattern and texture, size and scale etc. He also had to shoot in colour at ISO 100, and print them in black & white so that the viewer focuses only on the composition, rather than be distracted by the colours.

So yesterday we both ventured out into “da hood” – I was there with an umbrella due to dodgy weather all weekend. Husband was armed with his DSLR and the inanimate object of choice – miniature bicycle we bought on our recent trip to Bali.

And as you’ve probably figured out, the above shots are Husband’s, and below shots were taken by moi {a little “behind the scenes” of the day via the photographer’s assistant – ha!}.

I really, really love them. What do you think?

x dana

Thank you Joy. Although you have to admit that the bottom pics are just a tiny little bit better then my dodgy {yet evocative} iPhone shots ;)

Hot shots! I really like Nick’s first two shots the best. What a brave little bike, posing in the middle of a road median strip. x

Love your shots behind the scene. Makes it easier to understand how Nick makes his photos work. Nicks photos are awesome too, of course.
