Berlin based architecture studio atheorem have refurbished this 2-bedroom apartment in the trendy Mitte district, forming part of an apartment block dating back to 1890. The main rooms of the apartment were carefully brought back to their original condition in order to accentuate characteristic features found on site, such as historic doors, windows and parquet floors.

The only contemporary components of the new layout are the bathroom and the kitchen. They were designed in an abstract fashion in order to create a sublime contrast to the original Victorian design features, whilst echoing their materiality and tonality.

Curtains are a reoccurring strategy used to define spaces and to create atmosphere. In the bedroom and the kitchen, curtains discretely conceal the storage space. In the bathroom, they help to create a vast shower area when required. Minimalist, sharp, no-nonsense approach to detailing sets a beautiful contrast to the heritage aspect of this beautiful interior, creating a rich and warm atmosphere. I’m sold.
